Some say that due to heavy traffic government needs to build more roads in metropolitan cities. At the same time, others argue that this is not the right solution. To what extend do you agree or disagree?
While some believe that the government needs to build more roadways to travel in metro cities like Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai etc., there are also people who consider it to be ineffective as it does not address the key cause of the problem. I highly agree with this statement since it can be avoided with proper road regulations and avoid unnecessary strain on government funding.
Over congestion of vehicles is due to the fact that there are multiple types of carriers like trucks, vans, buses, cars, three-wheelers like autos, two-wheelers like motorbikes and scooters at the peak hours on the same roads. We have often seen two-wheelers trying to take advantage of the smallest of the gap between vehicles to move ahead of the traffic, causing severe congestions and accidents like hitting the vehicle in front of them, scrapping against the vehicles causing the paint to go off or causing damage to public property. This, in turn, makes the drivers stop the car and get out, causing chaos and traffic. This can be avoided to a great extent if four-wheelers are routed mostly through national highways instead of local municipality roads and if there is a standard lane for two-wheelers and three-wheelers alone. This will be a great move to reduce congestion at peak hours or normal hours alike, provided the road guidelines are strictly adhered to. For example, Statistics say 45% of vehicle traffic can be eliminated if there are stricter punishments for repeat offenders.
Even though heavy traffic might be just as important to avoid, health care definitely takes the priority. Health is wealth as we know it. Building more roads can be fruitful provided there is no other better use of our money as a resource. It is a wasteful expenditure to keep building alternative routes when we don’t manage the existing system of operation. Besides, government funding is always scarce to support the farmers, corporates, health and education sector alike. Maintenance of such roadways is expensive considering the rainy weather also leads to faster erosion of roads and already causes a strain. We can instead direct the funding to support the farmers to get chemical-free food to our tables, increase road tax to cover the maintenance expenses and ensure the health sector is improved with better amenities and state of the art facilities to develop a sustainable future.
In the recent budget of FY 2021, it was revealed that 23% of people die due to the non-availability of sufficient infrastructure to support the patients at government hospitals. With that being said, it is our key concern to make the general public follow road regulations and to ensure proper allocation of resources to reach the wider population.
